Record-breaking October weather enjoyed by Metro Vancouver kayak business

A balmy fall so far in Vancouver, with warm temperatures and sunny skies expected to last into mid-month.

The summer-like temperatures that have spread across much of British Columbia have led to a boom in customers for a Vancouver-area kayak business.

Manager of Deep Cove Kayak in North Vancouver, Lucas Putnam-Rea, says business has remained solid even as the fall season has begun.

“Normally it starts to slow down once the weather drops off but it hasn’t really slowed down,” he told CityNews Vancouver.

“We were fully booked out this past weekend serving tons and tons of customers. We’re very excited as you can imagine. ”

Putnam-Rea calls the sustained summer weather “unprecedented.”

“In September we would book out and be fully sold out but not into October like this,” he said, adding it’s helped make up for a cool start to the season.

Metro Vancouver weather records broken

CityNews Meteorologist Michael Kuss says numerous areas around B.C. have been setting temperature records for this time of year over the past few days.

“Sixteen more records set yesterday on Monday after more than 20 records set on Sunday,” he said.

Kuss says places like Agassiz, Abbotsford, Pitt Meadows, Powell River, and Squamish all set individual records on Monday, many of which topping 27 degrees.

The warm conditions are expected to stick around in the days ahead, with Kuss expecting sunny conditions heading into Thanksgiving weekend, including up to 27 degrees expected on Thursday.

And for owners like Putnam-Rea whose business is reliant on the weather, he says he’s “excited” for the current spree of warmth.

“There’s a lot of tourists coming from abroad. I kind of say ‘yeah we’ve never really had weather like this and it’s awesome. You guys should enjoy it while you can.”
