Man hurt after being dragged in carjacking near Victoria

One person has been arrested near Victoria in an alleged carjacking incident that left a man, who was trying to chase his stolen vehicle, hurt.

West Shore RCMP says it happened on Sunday at a Shell gas station on Island Highway in View Royal, just outside of the provincial capital, where a 2002 Mazda Protege was taken.

Police say the owner of the car tried to stop the theft and ended up getting dragged about 100 feet. The owner was injured and taken to the hospital where he is expected to recover.

Police say the suspect continued driving along Island Highway, before the car crashed into a parked camper van and swerved into oncoming traffic.

Mounties say the vehicle then collided into another one, eventually getting surrounded by witnesses who prevented the driver from leaving the scene.

The RCMP says 56-year-old Glenn George was arrested in connection with the incident.

“West Shore RCMP is still investigating this incident. We want to thank the members of the public who alerted the police and prevented George from leaving the scene,” said Insp. Stephen Rose. “Their brave actions no doubt prevented further harm from being caused.”

After a court appearance on Monday, George, who is known to police, was charged with four offences, including motor vehicle theft and assault with a weapon.

“It is important to reflect on how dangerous car thefts can be, in this case the owner of the vehicle sustained injuries while trying to prevent his vehicle from being stolen. If you find yourself in a similar situation, please find your way to safe place and call police for help,” said Rose.

George will remain in custody until his next court appearance on Oct. 13.
