Metal beam crashes through car windshield on Ironworkers: Vancouver police

A large metal beam impaled the windshield of a car, narrowly missing a young mother and child, on the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge, Friday.

Vancouver police say a truck headed to the North Shore lost part of its load around 2 p.m.

In the process, a huge metal beam came loose, bounced off the concrete, then over the median and into oncoming traffic, smashing into the vehicle.

“This was a bizarre chain of events and it’s a miracle nobody was killed or seriously injured,” said Sgt. Steve Addison with the VPD.

“We think the driver of the truck likely had no idea what happened, and continued on to the North Shore.”

The VPD says officers brought the mother and child home.

The incident created significant delays on the popular crossing throughout the afternoon.

Police say they are still looking for the driver of the truck.

Any witnesses or anyone with dash-cam footage is being asked to come forward.
