Voters in Coquitlam have re-elected Richard Stewart as mayor, with almost 70 per cent of the vote.
Initially, Stewart had said that he would be retiring after this term. However, in August, he announced that he wasn’t done yet, and that he would be looking to remain as the city’s mayor for the coming four years.
Stewart, who has served as Coquitlam’s mayor since 2008, took on the same two people who challenged him that year — Adel Gamar and Mark Mahovlich.
The incumbent mayor has lived in Coquitlam his entire life. He promised to continue working on projects he has ongoing, including his Mayors for Mental Health initiative – aimed at taking the stigma away from mental health issues.
His platform also included tackling housing affordability, adding childcare spaces, and looking after the environment.
Meanwhile, voters have also elected eight councillors and four school trustees.
Craig Hodge, Teri Towner, Steve Kim, Brent Asmundson, Matt Djonlic, Trish Mandewo, Robert Mazzarolo, and Dennis Marsden have been elected to council, while Jennifer Blatherwick, Carol Cahoon, Craig Woods, and Chuck Denison have been elected as Coquitlam school trustees.
