The man who pleaded guilty in the death of 19-year-old Bhavkiran “Kiran” Dhesi has been sentenced to seven years.
Harjot Singh Deo’s sentence is for manslaughter and indignity to human remains. He pleaded guilty to both charges earlier this year after Bhavkiran’s body was found in a burned-out SUV in Surrey in August of 2017.
However, the sentence fell short of what her family was hoping for.
“We’re not happy with that sentence because they killed our daughter,” said Kulwant Dhesi, who questioned the length of the sentence.
“He tried to destroy the body. That’s not manslaughter,” he added.
“Seven years is nothing,” Taljit Khakh, Bhavkiran’s cousin, said in response to the sentence.
In 2018, the woman’s sister told reporters that the family was still struggling with Bhavkiran’s death.
“We have been struggling with the reality that we can never see her sweet face again,” Anjali Dhesi said. “My sister had the brightest smile and the purest heart of anyone I’ve ever met.”
Bhavkiran had received a life-saving kidney transplant six months before her death.
“Kiran made her family whole and our lives meaningful. We remember her not only as a daughter but as a survivor,” her sister added.

Police say Deo had been in a relationship with Bhavkiran. He was arrested at Vancouver International Airport in May 2019 when he returned from a trip.
Initially, the man was charged with second-degree murder.
Both his mother and sister were also charged in connection with this case. Two additional members of his family were taken into custody.
Deo was released on bail in October 2019, and subject to strict conditions.
