DTES Street Church engulfed in flames

Fire broke out for the third time at the same building on the Downtown Eastside. Officials say flames started around noon on Tuesday at the Street Church building on East Hastings.

A section of East Hasting Street was closed for hours on Tuesday as crews responded to a fire at the Street Church.

Vancouver Fire Department (VFD) Public Information Officer, Matt Trudeau, told CityNews that 13 crews responded to the fire that had flames coming through the roof.

The two-storey Street Church had previously been destroyed by fire in July, which in September, had been ruled an arson.

Trudeau was unable to confirm the source of the fire or whether any people were in the building when it broke out, but confirmed the fire has been knocked down.

Online, people were suggesting the expropriated city property, the Balmoral Hotel was affected. However, Trudeau says it was contained to the Street Church.

“On arrival, we had numerous callers for smoke coming out of the building. … And we’re currently applying a large volume of water on the roof,” Trudeau said, adding it’s the third time crews have responded to the building this year.

The fire shut down East Hastings between Main to Columbia streets for a few hours but has since reopened.
