Port Moody’s council determined by random name draw

Drama has filled city hall in Port Moody, as the race for the sixth and final council position ended with a candidate having her name drawn out of a hat after a recount found her to be tied with another candidate.

Originally on Oct. 19 council candidate David Stuart was declared elected by the city’s chief election officer with 3,595 votes — two votes more than incumbent councillor Amy Lubik.

Lubik then filed for a recount on Oct. 24, and two days later, it found that Lubik and Stuart had actually tied in the municipal election. They both received 3,597 votes.

Due to the tie, and subject to B.C.’s Local Government Act, the sixth and final position on the council was then “determined by lot” — randomly picking a name out of a container.

“The name of each candidate was written on a separate piece of paper, folded in a uniform manner, and placed in a container large enough to allow them to be shaken. One paper was then randomly withdrawn from the container, and Judge Lee declared elected Amy Lubik for the sixth seat on Port Moody City Council,” the city said in a statement Friday.

The final council makeup includes Lubik, incumbent Diana Dilworth, and four new council members: Callan Morrison, Samantha Agtarap, Kyla Knowles, and Haven Lurbiecki.

According to the city, Port Moody’s voter turnout was 36.3 per cent in this year’s election.
