‘Unique housing’ in Vancouver’s West End creates stir online

A rental listing, which has since been removed, created quite a stir online, as it touted the ability to live “spontaneously” in a van in a Vancouver alleyway.

Posted to the classifieds website Craigslist, three vans were listed for rent on Gildford Street in the West End, each at nearly $1,000 a month.

“Proof that life is one beautiful ride. We have 3 separate vans to rent for December 1st. We have a special relationship with management to provide showers, washrooms, and sauna use 24/7 in the building with extra storage,” the advertisement read.

“‘Living in a van allows you to live spontaneously.’ … Very safe alley,” it continued.

One poster on social media site Reddit said they hoped the listing was a joke, saying, “Trying to help my friend find a place to live but the options are really limited when you are not loaded.”

Another user said, “What is next, an already set up tent in Stanley park! Only 750/mo, have special relationship with YMCA for showering! It is a steal of a deal!”

One user noted the vans available are only $100 less per month than their basement suite in Coquitlam.

“Becoming the literal Van City,” another wrote.

The listing came after a report from housing platform liv.rent last month found that renters in Metro Vancouver are spending 50 per cent of their income on housing in the region.

The report also ranked the most expensive cities to rent in Canada, which found they’re all in British Columbia.

West Vancouver tops the list at $2,828, followed by Vancouver at $2,589, North Vancouver at $2,499, and then Burnaby at $2,386.

CityNews reached out to the West End listing owner for comment and received an automatic reply.

“Access to the washrooms, showers, sauna, but not for the gym. That’s an additional cost. A month-to-month lease requires signing with a damage deposit set at $400,” listing owner Kelly said.
