Snow incoming for Metro Vancouver, special weather statement issued

Snow is in the forecast for Metro Vancouver. KierJunos looks at what you can expect when trying to get around the region on Tuesday afternoon.

Winter weather is on its way to the Lower Mainland this week, with snow expected to fall beginning Tuesday afternoon.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for all parts of Metro Vancouver, including Vancouver proper, Burnaby, New Westminster, North Vancouver and West Vancouver, Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, Surrey, Langley, Richmond, and Delta.

The weather agency says strong winds with sub-zero temperatures will bring “significant” snowfall accumulations.

It is also warning of poor travel conditions due to the snow and warns there is a slight risk of freezing rain for parts of the Fraser Valley.

CityNews Meteorologist Michael Kuss says although it’s quite early in the weather system, there is potential for 10 to 20 centimetres of snow to fall across the Lower Mainland.

“As with most coastal systems, temperatures are going to be right around freezing. So, the potential is there for some rain to mix in with that snow and where it does, the amounts are going to be lower. Where it doesn’t, [snow will be] on the higher end, for sure,” he said.

The two key ingredients for snow in the region are happening, Kuss explains, saying the “arctic air plunging in from the northeast and a Pacific-system laden with moisture that’s sliding down the coast, staying out over Vancouver Island but just clipping the South Coast, the Lower Mainland, and it has the potential to bring snow.”

Meanwhile, parts of the Lower Mainland already saw snow overnight into Monday morning. The Abbotsford Police Department is reminding drivers to take extra care on the roads as “some of our roadways are a little slippery this morning.”
