Suspect dead after alleged armed robbery near Duncan, IIO called in

The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) has been called in after one man died near Lake Cowichan.
According to the BC RCMP, officers got a call about an armed robbery at a business north of Duncan on Tuesday.
The suspect is said to have driven away before officers arrived. Police say they spotted the vehicle, but lost sight of it as it drove through Duncan.

The Island District RCMP Emergency Response Team was called in, and found the vehicle parked near Lake Cowichan around 4 p.m.
A short time later, Mounties say officers approached the vehicle, adding “no movement was seen inside.” The RCMP says officers found the suspect had died due to “what appears to be self-inflicted wounds.”

“The IIO BC is now investigating to determine whether police actions or inactions are linked to the man’s death,” RCMP said in a news release.
