WestJet cancels Vancouver, Toronto flights Friday; Air Canada warns of disruptions

WestJet says it’s proactively cancelling flights at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Toronto Pearson International Airport, as well as other airports in Ontario, B.C., and Quebec, as storm systems bear down on the regions.

The airline says the cancellations apply to all flights scheduled to arrive and depart Toronto’s Pearson beginning Friday at 9:00 a.m. Eastern until the end of day.

All scheduled flights in and out of Vancouver’s airport between 11:50 p.m. Pacific Thursday and late Friday afternoon are also cancelled.

Other airports affected by the service disruptions include those in Ottawa, London, Montreal, Waterloo, Abbotsford, Victoria, Nanaimo and Comox.

These airports will continue to weather the storm as snowfall and freezing rain dominate the upcoming forecast.

Meanwhile, Air Canada has issued an advisory warning of possible disruptions to its flights as the storms move through.

“Due to the current weather event affecting Vancouver (YVR), Toronto (YYZ), Montreal (YUL) and Ottawa (YOW), we understand that you may want to make alternate travel arrangements. If you currently have a reservation, Air Canada has implemented a policy that makes it possible for you to make voluntary changes to your itinerary if,” an update Thursday reads.

The policy applies to tickets purchased no later than Dec. 21 for travel between Dec. 20 and 28, and is possible if your “itinerary includes a flight to, from or via Vancouver (YVR), Toronto (YYZ), Montreal (YUL) and Ottawa (YOW).”

Air Canada also says it has implemented a “goodwill refund policy,” through which travellers can request a refund or travel voucher.

This is only available to customers who “purchased an Air Canada ticket no later than December 21, 2022 for travel between December 22, 2022 and December 26, 2022,” and if “your itinerary includes a flight to/from an airport in Canada.”
