TransLink urging Metro Vancouver to avoid travel Friday

The Lower Mainland’s transit provider is urging people not to travel Friday if possible as the region is under a winter storm warning.

TransLink says that while the warning is in effect, “customers are being asked to avoid travelling if possible. For those who have to travel, customers should expect delays and build in extra travel time.”

Extra staff have been working overnight to make sure buses and SkyTrains run during the possible snow and freezing rain event but warns of delays.

Several routes have already been affected Friday morning, with the Millennium Line experiencing track issues.

CityNews Meteorologist Carl Lam says the region can expect 10 to 15 centimetres of snow Friday before turning into freezing rain.

“It [will] change over to freezing rain, which is the biggest concern because anytime there is ice building up on any surface including the roads, it is absolutely treacherous out there.

“So make sure you adjust your plans accordingly today because this is going to be slick and dangerous if you are walking or driving on untreated surfaces,” Lam said.

The Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island is expected to see the most amount of freezing rain, however, the entire South Coast region is under an Environment and Climate Change Canada winter storm warning.
