Avoid travel through B.C.’s southern interior due to snow, freezing rain: province

Highways in B.C.’s southern Interior are in poor driving conditions due to snow and freezing rain, according to the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

In a statement issued on Sunday, officials urged drivers to avoid all non-essential travel until at least Wednesday due to bad weather being forecast on Monday.

Ministry staff said crews have been out in full force since the start of the severe winter storm on Friday, and highways are continuously being plowed, sanded, and salted.

However, officials warned conditions can change quickly.

Drivers needing to travel were advised by ministry staff to be extremely cautious and to be prepared for short notices of highway closures. The statement said precipitation increases the risk of avalanches and highways may need to be closed for avalanche control.
