TransLink to donate abandoned bikes from bike parkades

Had a long night and left your bike at TransLink Bike Parkade, only to forget where you locked it up? You’re doing a good deed, as TransLink is clearing out its bike parkades this month and donating any leftover bikes to those who need them.

But there’s still time to grab your ride, as the clearing-out doesn’t happen until the end of the month.

Long-term storage of bikes is not allowed in TransLink parkades to make sure there’s plenty of space each day for commuters.

Beginning next week, Metro Vancouver Transit Police will be tagging all bicycles stored in parkades, and on Jan. 26, if those bicycles haven’t been removed, and have the tags remaining on them, the bikes will be taken.

TransLink says that the move will also clean out the spaces before spring and summer when the parkades are used the most by customers. The transit operator has 11 parkades at stations around Metro Vancouver, and says it’s the largest bike parkade network in the country.

“All bicycles that have not been reported as stolen will be donated to the PEDAL Society’s Pedals for the People Program. The PEDAL Society is a non-profit organization that provides quality bicycles to Metro Vancouver residents in need of affordable transportation,” TransLink explained.

TransLink says transit police will be crosschecking databases to confirm whether any of the abandoned bikes were stolen.
