Flowers, chocolates, wine, and ‘I love yous’ are all common parts of Valentine’s Day, but the amount of money spent by couples this year could be more than you think.
In a survey by Time2play, an online gambling site, it says people in B.C. may be spending the most money on the holiday this year compared with the rest of the country.
In a survey of 1,000 Canadian, British Columbians who responded that they were in a relationship reported they are planning on spending an average of about $130 for their significant others.
Coming in at a close second, the survey says respondents from Quebec plan on spending an average of $115.
Alberta comes in third, with Albertan respondents spending an average of about $112.
Those in Ontario are also making the top of the list, with an average of $104 that locals are planning to spend.
The survey adds that all of the other provinces came in under the $100 mark, with New Brunswick bringing up the bottom with an average of $60.
Although people may be dolling out the big bucks on their loved ones, or loves to be, the survey says nearly 70 per cent of respondents don’t consider Valentine’s Day to be a “real holiday.”
The age-old dilemma of who should foot the bill for a romantic dinner also came up in the survey, with the majority of people saying “both parties should split the cost of a Valentine’s Day date,” and more than 70 per cent ruled in favour of planning the date together.
As for what to do on the day, grand romantic gestures may be appreciated in some cases, but the date idea that most people surveyed said they would prefer is “a romantic evening at home,” or going out for dinner.
