2nd BC Family Benefit boost payments roll out

The second installment of the BC Family Benefit boosted payments will soon be in the hands of some British Columbians with kids.

In a news release, Minister of Finance Katrine Conroy says the money is set to help families keep up with their living expenses.

“Global inflation continues to squeeze household budgets and paying for essentials like groceries and gas is hard on many families right now,” Conroy said.

“Parents will have a little extra money this month to stretch their budgets and provide their family with life’s essentials.”

More than 350,000 families across the province are set to get the money, the release explains, and eligibility is based on how many children there are along with how much money is coming in.

The first installment of the payments went out in January, with one more in the works for March.

“A family with two children can receive up to $350 more than usual over the three months. Added to the regular monthly payments, the three-month enhancement means a family with two children will get as much as $330 each month,” the release reads.

It’s estimated 75 per cent of families across the province will get the benefit. The B.C. government adds about 84 per cent of those families will get “at least an additional $50 per month, per child.”

The province says the money will come through as a direct deposit or cheque through the Canada Revenue Agency and could take over a week before it shows up.

It’s not something people have to additionally register for, the province adds, as eligibility is automatically determined when people register for the Canada Child Benefit.
