Vancouver International Airport (YVR) says over 15 per cent of flights have been cancelled or delayed in anticipation of a projected winter storm Saturday night.
YVR’s Vice President and Chief of External Affairs Mike McNaney tells CityNews YVR has been working with air carriers to thin out flight schedules. He says there could be further cancellations as they anticipate heavy snowfall from 7 p.m. Saturday to midnight.
“We understand of course that delays or cancellations is very problematic but we are taking these decisions for safety reasons and maintaining safety operations,” McNaney said.
We are expecting low visibility due to projected rate of snowfall tonight. For safety reasons, there is the potential for a pause on departures. Such a move is done with safety top of mind working with our airline partners and other agencies. pic.twitter.com/2BA1pWvjK2

McNaney explains that weather events such as heavy snow impact operations differently.
“Operations are impacted and they slow down.”

According to McNaney, planes have to be in line to go through de-icing procedures. He also notes the element of visibility which may cause a pause in both departures and arrivals.
McNaney says passengers should check with their airlines for updated flight schedules before heading to the airport.
