B.C.’s former premier shortlisted to name new school

There’s a new elementary school in Langford that needs a new name, and a former B.C. premier is in the mix.

There are 12 names shortlisted in three separate categories: geographical characteristics, local Indigenous culture and language, and historical names. John Horgan’s name is in the latter.

He’s been the MLA for the Langford-Juan de Fuca riding for years. However, earlier this month, he announced in the Legislature he would be stepping down from that role in March.

“I have tried over 18 years of this place as an MLA, 30 years working here, 63 years drawing breath, trying to make it better every day,” he said at the time.

Last June, he announced he would step down as premier, citing his dwindling energy following two successful bouts with cancer.

Other names being suggested are former Langford Mayor Stew Young, who was in office for three decades, and West Shore RCMP Const. Sarah Beckett, who was killed in the line of duty by an impaired driver in 2016.

The 32-year-old wife and mother of two died at the scene after a pick-up driver slammed into her police cruiser. Beckett was an 11-year veteran of the RCMP.
