B.C. woman killed in Mexico, Canadian man arrested

Family members, friends, and colleagues are in mourning after a woman from Dawson Creek, B.C. was killed in Mexico on Friday.

According to a GoFundMe page, 23-year-old Kiara Agnew and her boyfriend left for Mexico on Thursday for what was supposed to be a “dream birthday vacation.”

That vacation took a fatal turn when family members say they were notified of her death on Friday morning.

“This turned into a nightmare on March 3, 2023, when our family was notified of her death, at the hands of someone she loved, who turned out to be a monster,” said the GoFundMe post.

In a statement Friday, local authorities said Solidarity SSPyT police officers insured a person of foreign origin for the possible crime of femicide. The individual was taken into custody “after a lifeless woman was found with possible marks of violence in a hotel located in the Xcalacoco neighborhood.”

A Mexican news outlet is reporting the suspect detained is a Canadian man and that the woman was found dead inside a Riveria Maya resort hotel.

Additional information about the woman’s death and the arrest has not been released.

Agnew’s mother, Michele Levesque, later posted to Facebook that her daughter’s body will be returned to Dawson Creek.

Lake View Credit Union, which is located in Dawson Creek, confirmed the passing of their friend and colleague, Agnew in a post on Saturday morning.

“All at Lake View Credit Union are mourning the loss of our teammate and friend, Kiara Agnew. This is a devastating tragedy and loss for our community. We send our love and faith to all others who have been impacted,” its Facebook post reads.
