Crews battle East Vancouver structure fire

An East Vancouver fire has crews busy Saturday morning.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services has around 40 firefighters working to put out the fire at the intersection of East Broadway and Fraser Street.

Assistant chief Keith Stewart says crews were called around 5:45 a.m.

“When we arrived on scene, we had a fully involved structure,” he said.

One local captured smoke pouring out of the structure and shared the video on Twitter.

Stewart says crews were dealing with “heavy smoke coming out of the unit” when they initially attacked the fire.

“Eventually we were pulled out of the structure, we went from an offensive fire to a defensive fire,” he explained. “It’s a second-alarm (fire), and right now the fire is contained to the one unit.”

No one is believed to have been in the building, and Stewart says there are no injuries to report between locals and firefighters.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but Stewart says fire analysis crews will further investigate once flames are put out.
