Highway 1 WB reopens in Langley after chicken truck went into ditch

Highway 1 westbound has reopened in Langley hours after a truck transporting chicken cages went into the ditch.

The highway was shut down to westbound traffic after the incident between 232 Street and Glover Road around 4 a.m. Monday.

The closure lasted until around 2 p.m.

Prior to reopening the highway, Mainroad Contracting, which maintains the highway in the area, said crews were working “as quick as possible to transfer chickens cages onto a new truck.”

“It sounds like there was some spillage — I don’t know the exact amount — but there were some chickens that were out that they had to clean up as well. It’s a big clean up and process,” Darren Ell, general manager, Mainroad Lower Mainland Contracting, told CityNews.

Drivers were being detoured onto 232 Street amid the closure. DriveBC was warning people to “expect major delays” as crews worked to clear the road.

“This one was kind of a tricky one,” Ell said of the recovery process. “The heavy wreckers had to position themselves in a way that they could pull [the truck] out. And, unfortunately, to get that positioning, they had to shut down the highway, so it just took awhile to get rush hour traffic through as much as possible and then shut down the highway.”
