A man in Chilliwack’s Sardis area was killed and another was seriously injured Saturday, according to RCMP.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has been called in.
IHIT says shots were fired at a Sardis cemetery on Watson Road just before 7 p.m.
Officers reportedly arrived at the scene to find a man suffering from gunshot wounds. Police say a second person was brought to a hospital with serious injuries.
According to IHIT, a suspect vehicle was seen fleeing the scene while a similar car was found on fire shortly after at 224 Street in Langley. The homicide investigation unit says it’s working to confirm if the burned vehicle is connected to the shooting.
“At this time, we don’t believe there is any further risk to the public,” said Cpl. Martin Godard of the Chilliwack RCMP.
The victims have been identified but IHIT says it will not be releasing any names at this time.
“Our members will be working with the Chilliwack RCMP over the next few days to canvass the area for witnesses and for CCTV,” said Sergeant Timothy Pierotti of IHIT. “We’re asking anyone with information about this incident to please contact IHIT immediately.”
Chilliwack RCMP is asking for witnesses or anyone who was in the area of the Watson Road cemetery with dashcam video between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to contact police.
While the investigation is still in its “early stages,” IHIT says the shooting is believed to be targeted and is determining any connection to the Lower Mainland gang conflict.
Anyone who has more information is asked to contact IHIT on their info line at 1-877-551-4448, or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
