B.C.’s police oversight body is investigating after a man was shot and killed by Surrey RCMP officers during an attempted armed robbery Wednesday night.
In a release Thursday, Surrey RCMP says just after 9:30 p.m. officers responded to a Guildford motel after reports of a “suicidal person.” While at the motel, police say staff reported that an armed robbery was taking place.
“The attending officers located two suspects, and during the ensuing altercation, one officer discharged their firearm striking one suspect. The second suspect was taken into custody without incident and no one else was injured,” Surrey RCMP said in a statement.
Police say the man died at the scene.
The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is now investigating, and as such, Surrey Mounties say they will not be sharing any further information about the death.
The IIO is called in to investigate when death or serious harm occurs to individuals involving police.
The victim of the armed robbery was spoken to by police, and police say the person in mental health distress was tended to and their “well-being confirmed.”
Police had 104th Avenue shut between 140th and 138th streets for hours overnight. It has since reopened.
The IIO is expected to provide further details later Thursday.
