BC Ferries hears barks loud and clear, expands pet areas to passenger decks

Dogs and other small animals will no longer have to be left in cars and on the vehicle decks during BC Ferries sailings, as the company announces it’s expanding its pet areas on some sailings.

“You barked and we listened,” the ferry service said, starting mid-May on sailings between Nanaimo and Horseshoe Bay, Powell River and Comox, and Earls Cove and Saltery Bay, pets will be allowed to take in the sights on the upper passenger decks.

However, it’s not a free-for-all for your furry friend. There are some requirements that must be adhered to while pets are on the decks.

Leashes must be kept to one metre or shorter while on board the ferry, and access to the upper deck with your pet has to be via the pet-friendly stairwell. BC Ferries says it has signed this with paw prints. Folks who would like to use of an elevator can ask crew to help guide them to the right one.

Pets will only be allowed outside in the designated pet area on the deck, and they’re not allowed inside any of the passenger lounges or cafe areas of the ferry.

“We love animals, but only well-behaved dogs on a leash and cats in carriers will be permitted in the outside pet areas on the upper passenger deck, with a maximum of two pets per handler,” BC Ferries explained.

The ferry service says that giving your pet some exercise before boarding can make your pet more comfortable during its ride. It also urges to keep pets hydrated, clean up after your pet to maintain a clean environment, and to make sure all cats, ferrets, and other small animals stay on board in a carry case.
