A wild police chase that stretched from Abbotsford to Surrey ended Tuesday with two people in custody and five police cruisers destined for the body shop.
Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) Sgt. Paul Walker tells CityNews that an officer noticed a pickup truck with licence plates that didn’t match.
During an attempted traffic stop, the driver of the pickup rammed into the police cruiser and then took off.
“Every day we’re doing traffic stops in our communities. Police officers are faced with the unknown. The majority of them go quite successfully and are safe, but then the other ones like last night’s incidents — you’re not expecting that,” Walker said.

Walker says other officers spotted the truck again and began tailing it on Highway 1 near the Mt Lehman interchange, and eventually into the City of Surrey.
Police managed to box the truck in a cul de sac near Sequoia Drive and 80th Street where officers say the driver damaged four more cruisers. One officer was hurt during that incident, and the driver managed to free himself and the truck from the box.
Because of the risk to the public, AbbyPD officers stopped following the driver and vehicle. A short time later, the driver, passenger, and truck were found just a few blocks away.
Walker says that no one was hurt and the driver, along with his passenger, were eventually arrested.
“There are individuals out there that are up to criminal activity in our various communities, and they have no regard for public safety. They put not only the communities at risk, but us as frontline officers,” Walker said.
A 25-year-old Surrey man is now facing charges of assaulting a police officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, and prohibited driving. A 35-year-old woman was arrested on outstanding warrants, along with flight from police, obstruction of a peace officer, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
The man remains in police custody awaiting a court appearance Wednesday morning.
AbbyPD is now asking the public to come forward if they have any information or dashcam footage of the incident.
