A “runaway bus” in Horseshoe Bay ended up on the front lawn of a house, after the driver was trying to fix the door, the bus started rolling, and he fell out.

The West Vancouver Police Department says it all happened when the driver got up to fix one of the bus doors when it started rolling down the hill near Nelson Avenue and Marine Drive.

He fell out of the bus, which ended up slowly rolling into the front yard of a house and stopping at the house’s retaining wall.

Two passengers were on the bus, but both were unhurt.

One local who lives nearby tells CityNews about what he saw.

“I saw this bus coming down the hill and it had two passengers on it in the back and then it stopped at the bus stop,” he said.

“I saw the doors open [but] then they weren’t closing so then the bus driver put on his flashing hazards…Then they shut down the engine of the bus to see if they could get the door closed.”

A few minutes later, he says the driver re-started the engine.

“Then the driver got off the bus with the engine running and the brakes on, and then the next thing I know, I hear the air brakes let go and the bus driver is trying to get back on the bus to see if he can jam the brakes on,” he said.

“Well, he fell back and almost got run over by the bus.”

He says the bus narrowly missed the house.

Due to his fall, police say the driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and investigators add it’s unclear what prompted the bus to roll.
