Vancouver hiker missing around Mount Harvey, Lions Bay

A man from Vancouver is missing after a solo hike up Mount Harvey Wednesday.

Lions Bay Search and Rescue has been scouting the mountain and surrounding area for signs of Michael Tu since early Thursday morning.

Martin Colwell tells CityNews the 29-year-old man texted his family at around 10:55 a.m. telling them he had reached the summit of Mount Harvey. The family expected him home later that evening, but he never showed up.

“We got a call at 2 a.m. and we found out his vehicle is still here in Lions Bay at the parking lot, so it appears he didn’t make it off the mountain,” Colwell said.

Colwell says Tu has done other hikes in the area and appears to be experienced, well-equipped, and organized — with his gear including microspikes that would help with traction in the snow — but while Mount Harvey can be a fairly straightforward hike for someone experienced, it isn’t one that comes without complications.

“Most people go up to the summit and they follow the trail back down without incident, but you can miss the trail,” he said.

“If you do try to go off either side of the summit — north, south, or east — it’s very steep, and you can get into serious trouble there.”

Colwell says, as search and rescue teams are unaware of Tu’s location, they’re unaware of any injuries to this point.

Lions Bay Search and Rescue ask anyone who sees a man resembling Tu — or anyone with any information about Tu’s whereabouts — to contact the Squamish RCMP at 604-892-6100.
