Clean sweep for NDP in B.C. byelections

The New Democratic Party candidates in both of Saturday’s byelections have been firmly voted in by their constituents.

NDP candidate Joan Phillip won the Vancouver-Mount Pleasant byelection Saturday, according to Elections BC.

In preliminary voting results, Phillip won the seat with almost 68 per cent of the primary vote.

Jackie Lee, the BC United candidate, came second with almost 14 per cent of the vote. Wendy Hayko of the BC Greens rounded out the top three, with just over 11 per cent of the total vote.

That seat was left vacant after the departure of former New Democrat cabinet minister Melanie Mark.

Mark was the first Indigenous woman to serve as a B.C. cabinet minister and announced her resignation in February, citing family matters.

In that constituency, 7,964 votes were cast.

On Vancouver Island, the Langford-Juan de Fuca riding was won by NDP candidate Ravi Parmar with just over 53 per cent of the preliminary vote, according to Elections BC.

In second place, Mike Harris with the Conservation Party won almost 20 per cent of the vote. Camille Currie, with the BC Greens, came in third place with almost 18 per cent of the vote.

However, it seems voters shifted away from BC United during this year’s campaign, as that candidate, Elena Lawson, received just under 9 per cent of the vote, coming in fourth place.

In that riding, 13,542 votes were cast.

That riding was left vacant by former premier John Horgan, who stepped down in October 2022, citing his health. Subsequently, he left his position as MLA in March of this year.
