Street festival takes over Vancouver’s Chinatown this weekend

The 21st Vancouver Chinatown Festival is taking over the streets this weekend, as thousands flock to the area to celebrate and experience the vibrancy of Chinatown.

Beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, the festival features live stage performances, a historical Chinatown heritage walking tour, MahJong, a petting zoo, and tens of food trucks and artisan vendors to patronize.

“We celebrated the diversity of the community and showcased Chinatown as an inclusive, sustainable, and resilient neighbourhood. Vancouver Chinatown Festival has grown into a highly anticipated summer signature event for Vancouverites as well as tourists from around the world,” the festival says of its event last year.

Focused around the area of Keefer and Columbia streets, festivities run until about 6 p.m. each evening.

Organized by the Vancouver Chinatown BIA Society, the two-day event is totally free for folks wanting to attend and take in the delights.

“Every year, we bring new ideas and activities to make our event unique, interesting, and a fun-filled experience for families, visitors, and include the diversity of our community.”

Road closures are in effect in the area. Keefer Street is closed between Main and Columbia streets. It will be busy in the area, so take East Hastings as an alternate route.
