B.C. residents living with diabetes have access to prick-free device

People in B.C. living with diabetes can now apply to receive a FreeStyle Libre, a monitoring device notably covered by BC PharmaCare.

The flash glucose monitor — which is inserted under the skin — allows users to read their blood-sugar levels by swiping a hand-held device or smartphone over the sensor.

This helps those living with diabetes avoid having to prick their finger multiple times a day to get a proper reading.

When the sensor is scanned, it instantly shows real-time glucose readings and information.

BC Pharmacare started covering a continuous glucose monitor — the Dexcom G6 — in June 2021, but it required users to prick their finger throughout the day to test their blood sugar levels.

“Some people may prefer how the FreeStyle Libre is applied or its reduced frequency of sensor replacement,” reads a release from the provincial government.

Currently, Pharmacare covers roughly 13,000 patients’ usage of the Dexcom G6, and some of those customers will be given the go-ahead to switch over to the FreeStyle Libre.

Meanwhile, new patients will be able to start with the FreeStyle Libre when it becomes a Pharmacare benefit.
