Attempted carjacking near Surrey RCMP headquarters ends in arrest

The Surrey RCMP says a man has been arrested and taken into custody after an alleged attempted carjacking near the E Division Headquarters Wednesday.

In a statement to CityNews, Mounties say the incident began at the parking lot of the Jim Pattison Centre building on Green Timbers Way when an off-duty police officer reported that someone had tried to “unsuccessfully” carjack his personal vehicle around 1:15 p.m.

Police say the man then ran off into the Green Timbers Forest.

“A short time later the suspect male threw a rock through the window of a vehicle driving in the parking lot of the Green Timbers BC RCMP (E Division) Headquarters building,” the RCMP said. “He then ran into the lobby of the BC RCMP building where he allegedly chased two civilian employees and brandished a knife.”

Police officers and other security measures were “immediately engaged,” and the man was arrested and taken into custody, police say.

During the incident, one of the glass security doors was broken, and some of the responding officers received minor injuries. Police did not elaborate on those said injuries.

The suspect was also taken to hospital for minor injuries before being cleared and taken to Surrey Cells.

“There are no indications at this time that the incident was targeted towards police, but any possible motive will form part of the ongoing investigation,” police say. “This was a scary incident for the civilian staff, officers, and all those who witnessed it. The immediate and decisive actions of the officers and staff helped ensure a quick resolution to this incident.”
