18-year-old shot, killed by Vancouver police: IIO

An 18-year-old is dead after he was shot by police in East Vancouver, according to B.C.’s police watchdog.

According to the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), officers were called to the area of Clinton Park, near Grant and Penticton streets, around 2:15 a.m. Saturday.

Police say officers found a person who had a gun and says “shots were fired, adding, “the suspect was shot by police.”

He was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries.

It’s unclear at this point how many officers were involved, but the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC confirms it was “more than one.”

The VPD notes that no officers were hurt, and “no victims related to the initial 9-1-1 call have been located.”

The watchdog is looking into the circumstances around the fatal shooting.
