West Vancouver shooting leaves man facing attempted murder charges

A police shooting in West Vancouver in June that left a man seriously injured has now resulted in fresh charges against the suspect, the West Vancouver Police Department says.

In an update released Wednesday, 39-year-old Siavash Ahmadi has now been charged with nine offences, including two attempted murder charges, break and enter, impaired operation of a motor vehicle, and several firearms-related offences.

The WVPD says Ahmadi has been remanded in custody.

The charges come after the incident on June 26 which saw the Independent Investigations Office of BC, the province’s police oversight body, called in after a man was seriously injured during an exchange of gunfire with police just after 3 a.m.

According to the IIO at that time, the WVPD responded to reports of an impaired driver near the Highway 1 westbound off-ramp at 15 Street.

Police said gunshots were exchanged between officers and the man, and the suspect was also struck by a police vehicle. The suspect was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

The WVPD says the IIO is still investigating the actions of police officers, and will not be releasing any further information as the case is now before the courts.

Ahmadi will next front court in North Vancouver on Aug. 24.
