Mounties on Vancouver Island responded to what they say was an “unusual call for help” in Langford Tuesday night.
The West Shore RCMP says calls came in just after 9:30 p.m. for reports of screaming coming from a home in the area. After the initial report, officers say they got another call, this time saying a dog had been attacked.
It turns out the medium-sized canine was attacked by a raccoon in the yard before it ran into the house and was followed by the critter. After the raccoon got inside, it apparently also attacked the people living there.
The RCMP says the residents managed to trap the animal in the bathroom and called police to help them get it out of the home. The other reports about screaming coming from the residence were “no doubt due to the raccoon invader,” investigators added.
While officers called Animal Control, police say no one was available to attend, so police took matters into their own hands.
The West Shore RCMP shared a video of the attempts to trap the raccoon, with two officers seen crowding around a bathroom.
One of the officers is seen holding a “dog pole,” which they brought with them, and say they also used a lacrosse pole, offered up by the homeowner, to try to coax the animal out of the bathroom. In the video, the second officer is seen crowding over the first’s shoulder, with residents and laughter heard in the background before someone says, “He was fighting all of us.”
“After putting up a pretty decent fight, the raccoon was secured by the officers and was released outside,” the RCMP says.
“This was a bizarre encounter for police,” said Corp. Nancy Saggar.
Saggar admits officers “generally do not attend wildlife calls,” but the situation in this case warranted action.
“Residents in the home had received injuries from this animal and Animal Control was not available, so the officers stepped in to help,” she added.
All in all, investigators say the people and dog living in the home received minor injuries.
