Dump truck driver charged after ‘erratic driving’ in Massey Tunnel

A man has been charged under the BC Motor Vehicle Act after a dump truck was spotted “being driven erratically” through the Massey Tunnel last month.

According to BC Highway Patrol, officers received reports from other motorists about their concerns on Highway 99 approaching the tunnel around 3 p.m. on Aug. 23.

Investigators say the dump truck was seen heading south, and was “intercepted” as it got out of the tunnel.

“Subsequent investigation determined that the driver … was impaired by a drug,” Mounties said.

In addition to several charges, the driver, only identified as a Surrey man in his 30s, also lost his licence for a 24-hour period. The dump truck was impounded, the RCMP adds.

BC Highway Patrol-Burnaby says calls from the public reporting the incident helped officers respond quickly “before it could result in any injury or property damage.”
