Vancouver Fire rescues person who fell down Commercial Drive embankment

Commercial Drive at Grandview Highway was blocked in both directions for 45 minutes Thursday evening after someone had fallen down the embankment.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services Assistant Fire Chief Ken Gemmill with said its technical rescue team was called to the scene where someone had fallen onto the train tracks at Grandview Highway and Commercial Drive, which he says is about a 30-foot drop.

“Our tech rescue team went down and they rappelled down and they grabbed them,” he told CityNews. “They harnessed them and they brought them back up.”

The individual suffered no injuries, Gemmill adds.

Gemmill said it is a “regular spot where we get people going over the edge.” However, he adds this isn’t something that happens daily.

He said the incident is now over and “the scene has been mitigated.”
