BC United Abbotsford MLA Bruce Banman jumps ship, joins Conservatives

The Conservative Party of BC now has official party status, after a second BC United MLA jumped ship.

On Wednesday, it was announced that Abbotsford South MLA Bruce Banman officially became a member of the B.C. Conservatives, giving the party two seats — equal to the BC Greens — and a voice in question period in the Legislature.

Banman’s move came after John Rustad also left BC United for the Conservative Party.

“When I was elected MLA for Abbotsford South, I promised to bring the concerns of everyday hardworking people and families to the forefront in British Columbia’s Legislature in Victoria,” Banman said in a statement.

“Today, after careful consideration, I have made the decision to join the Conservative Party of British Columbia to keep that promise to my community and my constituents.”

Banman goes on to say that, as a member of the Conservative Party, he is “looking forward” to speaking “honestly” on behalf of his constituents.

“Conservatives have common sense. We don’t support Trudeau-backed policies like the punishing carbon tax that hurts everyday people; we refuse to condone the ideological NDP education agenda that teaches students what to think instead of how to think; and, we will never support the myth of safe supply that kills British Columbians and poisons our communities with hard drugs,” he said.

Banman was previously Abbotsford’s mayor.

He gained infamy in that job when, under his leadership, city staff dumped chicken manure where unhoused people were camping.
