B.C. releases further Burnaby Hospital expansion plans

Additional health-care services are on the way in Burnaby, as the province has announced approved services coming as part of the Burnaby Hospital redevelopment.

B.C. Minister of Health Adrian Dix says this brings people in and around Burnaby “one step closer to accessing even stronger health-care services.”

“The redevelopment is part of our government’s plan to modernize and expand hospitals in the Lower Mainland and across B.C. This will increase access to care and provide supports for cancer care, which is critical,” he said.

“The redevelopment of Burnaby Hospital is great news for residents and is something they’ve been eagerly anticipating. Burnaby is a rapidly growing city and it’s so important that the capacity is there to deliver the high-quality care our residents need,” Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley added.

The new expansion includes a new inpatient tower — the province says the tower is expected to include an integrated cancer centre, as well as 160 private rooms, as well as general medicine, medical oncology, cardiac telemetry and intensive care and high-acuity units.

The in-house BC Cancer Centre is expected to include “54 ambulatory care rooms, 31 chemotherapy chairs, space for five linear accelerators, space for two PET/CT scanners, an oncology pharmacy, and clinical trials and research space.”

A tear down of the hospital’s West Wing building, an expanded renovation to its Support Facilities building, and renovations to a Nursing Tower endoscopy suite are included in the renovation plan as well.

The province says construction plans are scheduled to start in 2025, with 2030 set as a target year for the $1.7 billion project’s completion.

Wednesday’s announcement builds on the first phase of the hospital’s redevelopment, which includes another new tower expected to open in 2025.
