More evacuation alerts, upgraded to orders in the Cariboo region of B.C.’s interior

New evacuation orders have been put into place in the Cariboo region of B.C.’s central interior this weekend.

Due to the Hell Raving Creek Wildfire, two previous evacuation alerts have been upgraded to evacuation orders over the past three days, as the fire’s risk to life has grown.

A new evacuation order was issued on Sunday for 28 parcels of land in the Horn Lake Area. This adds to another 28 parcels of land that were already placed under evacuation order Friday.

The out-of-control fire has grown hundreds of hectares since Friday, southwest of the community of Tatla Lake.

It’s currently estimated to be approximately 11,423 hectares, which is a brazen leap from its estimated 200 hectares only two days ago.

Affected residents are being asked to evacuate north on Bluff Lake Road to Highway 20, then head east towards Williams Lake.

The Cariboo Fire Centre experienced high winds this weekend due to a cold front, which contributed to increased smoke and fire activity.

Fire Information Officer Talia McKay said the Cariboo Fire Centre would see gusts of up to 40 to 50 kilometres per hour over the weekend, making conditions challenging for crews working on this fire.

“Due to those high winds, increased smoke will be visible and fire activity is expected to challenge suppression efforts,” McKay said.

Southwest of the Hell Raving Creek fire, an existing evacuation order remains in place for the Twist Creek area.
