Sunshine Coast region sees evacuation orders, state of emergency due to wildfire

The Clowhom Lake wildfire in the Sunshine Coast Regional District has continued to grow, triggering an increase in the properties on evacuation order from seven to 10.

The local state of emergency declared by the district remains in place.

The Clowhom Lake wildfire is currently 450 hectares in size, and classified as out-of-control by the BC Wildfire Service. It was caused by lightning and is slowly continuing to spread.

The affected area, located up the Salmon Inlet on the Sunshine Coast, is considered a remote area.

The surrounding area on evacuation alert has also been expanded, but this only encompasses Crown land and no further properties.

“It’s important for people to abide by evacuation orders” says Rob Michael, emergency operations centre director for the district. “Structure protection is also being implemented for properties within the alert area.”

The district says it’s working together with BC Wildfire Service to coordinate efforts to protect people and property.
