Around 60 homes and businesses in Vancouver’s Dunbar neighbourhood were affected by a gas leak Tuesday, according to an update from FortisBC.
The utility provider says its crews are on site dealing with the issue, and while the repairs have been made, there is still work to be done to restore service.
To do this, manager of corporate communications Nicholas Insley tells CityNews, that they will be speaking with residents directly.
“FortisBC crews will work to restore service for affected customers as quickly as possible,” he said.
“A FortisBC technician will visit each affected home to restore gas service at the meter and relight all affected appliances. If no one is home, the FortisBC service crew will leave a door tag that provides contact information to schedule a re-light.”
Vancouver Fire Rescue Services acting Assistant Chief of Operations Al Gregory told CityNews crews attended the incident on 28 Avenue and Dunbar Street earlier in the day after a contractor reportedly severed a gas line.
Buildings in the adjacent one-block radius were evacuated at that time, Gregory says, noting that there were no ignition sources “anywhere near the line.”
Insley says the cause of the leak is unknown, but “we do know it was caused by an external party,” he said.
A door tag will be left for residents who are not home when technicians arrive. Anyone with a tag is asked to call the emergency line at 1-877-711-8811 to make arrangements to restore service.
