Hiker saved by North Shore Rescue after having ‘difficulty holding on’ to cliff edge

One of the Lower Mainland’s search and rescue teams made a late-night save Wednesday after a hiker became stuck on a cliff on Mt Fromme.

North Shore Rescue says the hiker called 911, and told operators that “he was hanging on and wasn’t sure how long he could hold on.”

“A crew responded to our Bone Creek SAR station by Rice Lake and was picked up by Talon Helicopters. By this time it was dark and pilot and hoist operator were on NVG’s (nighttime vision goggles),” NSR said in a Facebook post.

NSR says the hiker then called 911 again, saying he was “having difficulty holding on.”

“His location was quickly spotted via NVG’s as he shined his phone flashlight at the machine. Two night-hoist-trained techs were inserted via a 250-foot hoist through tall trees into steep terrain onto a bench about 30 feet from the subject.

“After setting up a rope belay one NSR member climbed over to the subject and placed him in a harness. They were then belayed back to the bench,” NSR explained.

The man was then hoisted up, with rescuers being pulled up after.

NSR says the man was saved from the same exact spot where a hiker fell to his death two years ago.

“The back of Mt Fromme is extremely steep and dangerous terrain,” it said. “Excellent flying and precision hoisting by Talon on this call.”
