Roberto Luongo to be inducted into Ring of Honour in December

Get ready to hear the sounds of “Luuuuuuuu” ring loud and proud in Rogers Arena this December.

The Vancouver Canucks have announced beloved former goalie Roberto Luongo will be inducted into the Ring of Honour on Dec. 14, when the team hosts the Florida Panthers.

“We are glad to officially have a date set for Roberto’s incredibly well-deserved induction to the Canucks Ring of Honour,” said Vancouver Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford.

“He is one of the greatest players to ever represent this team and his legacy continues in Vancouver to this day. As proud as we are to recognize Roberto with this achievement, it is as much of an honour for the organization and our fans to be able to celebrate him again in our building.”

It was announced last November that Luongo would be inducted into the Ring of Honour, though a date had not been set at the time. The induction into the prestigious club was unanimously voted on by a group of ex-players, broadcasters, and other members of the Canucks organization.

Luongo spent eight years in Vancouver, from 2006 to 2014. He holds a number of franchise records, including being the team’s all-time leader in wins and shutouts. “Bobby Lu” was also the starting goaltender for the Canucks’ Stanley Cup Finals run in 2011, when the team eventually fell to the Boston Bruins.

During his NHL career, he was also nominated for several awards, including the Vezina Trophy, Lester B. Pearson Award, the Hart Memorial Trophy, and the William Jennings Trophy. He won that final award in 2011 alongside former teammate Cory Schneider for the lowest goals-against average in the league.

In addition to all this, Luongo was named the Canucks’ Most Valuable Player twice, the team notes.

Luongo left the Canucks as the team’s “all-time wins leader with a regular season record of 252-137-50.” He was traded to the Florida Panthers in March of 2014 before retiring from hockey in June 2019. The Panthers retired his jersey in March 2020.

The Ring of Honour is not the only elite club Luongo will belong to. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Nov. 14, 2022.

Luongo will become the eighth player to be inducted into the Ring of Honour, where he will join Orland Kurtenbach, Kirk McLean, Thomas Gradin, Harold Snepsts, Pat Quinn, Mattias Ohlund, and Alex Burrows.
