Funeral ceremony for RCMP Const. Rick O’Brien scheduled for Wednesday

B.C.’s Mounties say a funeral will be held for the late Const. Rick O’Brien on Wednesday, Oct. 4 in Langley.

51-year-old O’Brien was shot on Friday, Sept. 22 when he and other officers were searching a home in Coquitlam as part of an ongoing investigation. He was killed in the line of duty after succumbing to his injuries, and two other Ridge Meadows RCMP officers were hurt after an “altercation” took place.

O’Brien is survived by his wife and children.

As the B.C. RCMP explains the funeral will take place at 2 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre with a procession, memorial service, and final salute to follow.

Police say they are working with the community as the procession may directly impact local groups, schools, and businesses. As the funeral goes on, police say 80 Avenue will be closed between 200 Street and 204 Street, 76 Avenue between 200 Street and 202a Street, and 202a Street between 74B Avenue and 80 Avenue. Meanwhile, Mounties asks anyone who needs to access other facilities at the Langley Events Centre to use the 200 Street entrance during the ceremony.

While seating at O’Brien’s funeral is reserved for friends, family, officials, invited guests, and first responders, police say members of the public will be invited to watch the procession march from outside the venue.
