Michael Dunahee’s family warns of online imposter

The family of Michael Dunahee, who vanished in Victoria three decades ago, is warning the public a person claiming to be him isn’t who they say they are.

Dunahee’s family took to Facebook to say there had been some posts by someone claiming to be Michael, adding some people may have even been contacted directly by the supposed online imposter.

“We can confirm he is not,” the family wrote. “We are working closely with the police to ensure he gets the help he needs. Please do not engage in conversations with him, and most importantly, please do not send him money as he was requesting. Thank you for your compassion for all involved.”

Michael Dunahee went missing from near a playground at Blanshard Elementary School in Victoria on March 24, 1991, at the age of four.

There have been many theories around his disappearance, which remains one of B.C.’s most high-profile missing persons cases.

Every year, Dunahee’s family holds a “Keep the Hope Alive” five-kilometre walk and run in Michael’s honour. Police have also shared sketches of what Michael would likely look like today.

Victoria police released in 2021 an age-enhanced sketch of Michael Dunahee, who vanished when he was four years old in 1991. The sketch shows what Dunahee might have looked like at age 34.

Hundreds of volunteers and a number of police agencies helped in the effort to try to find the boy, but no trace of Michael was ever found.
