1 arrested and 1 hospitalized in ‘violent’ Vancouver road rage incident: police

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says a pedestrian was hospitalized after a violent road rage incident in Vancouver on Friday afternoon.

Police tell CityNews the incident started as a near-collision between the driver of a Nissan Xterra and the pedestrian in question but resulted in an “extremely violent road rage incident.”

The VPD explains that the driver was making an attempt to turn onto Bute Street from Robson Street. At the same time, the pedestrian was making their way across the street at the corner so the driver had to “slam on the brakes.”

“The pedestrian became angry and started banging on the passenger-side window. The pedestrian then walked to the front of the car,” police said to CityNews.

“The driver lurched forward, knocked the pedestrian to the ground, and rolled over him.”

Police say multiple people witnessed the incident. Some came to the pedestrian’s assistance while others called 9-1-1. The VPD says officers were in the area and able to make their way to the scene quickly — arresting the 53-year-old driver of the Nissan Xterra for “assault and driving offences” upon arrival.

Meanwhile, the 48-year-old victim was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police have acquired video evidence and firsthand accounts from witnesses and seized the driver’s vehicle. Criminal charges are being recommended against the driver.
