12-year-old hit by recycling truck in Pitt Meadows dies

Mounties in Pitt Meadows say a 12-year-old has died after they were hit by a recycling truck while riding their bike to school Wednesday morning.

The Ridge Meadows RCMP says it happened around 8:30 a.m. at the corner of 116A Avenue and 196B Street.

Despite life-saving measures by paramedics and fire crews, the child was pronounced dead.

Mounties say the driver of the recycling truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

The RCMP’s Serious Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation, which remains active.

“Our hearts and thoughts go out to the families of everyone involved,” said Insp. Martin Guay in a release. “This is a tragic and devastating loss for our community.”

The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District says in a statement it was informed of the child’s death Wednesday.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the student’s family and friends during this unimaginably difficult time,” the district said.

“Our focus now is on ensuring that counselling supports are available to any students, staff, and school communities who may be impacted by this news.”

Police are asking for any witnesses, or those with dash cam or surveillance footage, to call the Ridge Meadows RCMP at 604-483-6251.
