Classes are cancelled for the day after a fire broke out at Cloverdale Traditional School in Surrey Thursday morning.
Surrey Assistant Fire Chief Rich Bodnark says crews were called around 7 a.m. to the school to find the exterior fully engulfed in flames.
Bodnark says 17 firefighters and 7 apparatus were able to put the blaze out.
“The school has been shut down for the day at the discretion of the school board,” he told CityNews. “The fire is under investigation and we do not have a cause at this time.”
Due to the age of the school, and the building’s materials, Bodnark says it was a difficult fire to fight.
“This allowed for multiple void spaces for fire to advance into,” he said. “Through their hard work and determination, the crews were able to fully extinguish all interior fire conditions.”
