Toy gun causes incident involving Burnaby, Surrey, and Abbotsford police

Police say two people were arrested in Abbotsford after a gun scare sparked a multi-department response Sunday.

Around 1:30 p.m., 911 was called after a witness saw two vehicles driving east on Highway 1 near Burnaby’s Kensington exit. Officers say someone reported seeing someone in a car point a gun at another vehicle driving on the highway.

“They said they definitely saw a hand gun pointed at the other vehicle,” Mike Kalanj, media relations officer with the Burnaby RCMP, told CityNews. “At the time, they weren’t sure if a shot was fired, but they were able to get the licence plate and give a description of the vehicle and the licence plate to the 911 operators.”

The vehicles continued along the highway and got all the way into Abbotsford, where officers from the Surrey RCMP and Abbotsford Police Department located them and arrested two brothers, aged 17 and 20.

Police later found a toy gun in one of the cars.

“There were some harsh conversations explaining what not to do when you’re driving,” Kalanj said.

He says the brothers listened to officers’ directions and are no longer in police custody.

Kalanj says he doesn’t believe charges will be forwarded.
