Surrey soccer team expelled from Metro League after reported ‘assault’

A soccer team in Surrey accused of being involved in “an assault” on a Newton pitch has been suspended from the Vancouver Metro Soccer League (VMSL).

The league says it “does not condone or tolerate the type of behaviour witnessed on November 4th.”

According to the RCMP, officers received reports of a “disturbance” at Newton Athletic Park Saturday around 8 p.m.

“Once on scene, officers learned an assault had occurred,” Mounties said in an email.

The Surrey RCMP explains two soccer teams, along with some spectators, were “involved,” though it could not provide any additional information about the people connected.

“No one was transported to hospital; however, Surrey RCMP is speaking with all parties involved,” the email continued, adding investigators are speaking with the people involved and are reviewing video to figure out “all circumstances that led up to the assault.”

No arrests have been made.

The VMSL says “disciplinary action was taken” on Saturday at a board meeting.

“The DLT Blazers have been expelled from the VMSL with immediate effect and Vancouver Patagonia FC A has been sanctioned for their part in the incident,” VMSL Manager Mike Coulter said in a statement, noting the league is “cooperating with the RCMP investigation.”
